@MillerMachinima J. Edgar Hoover, head of the FBI at the time, pretty much didn't like him. He was a film maker, sympathetic to the poor and slightly left leaning. When Chaplain made his films, the authority characters (the police, the tough guys, etc) were the butt of his jokes. Hoover thought he was a bad influence. So, because he wasn't a US citizen (officially), as soon as he left for a holiday, they exiled him. Only found out on the way back.
