What is this coming from? I have the 2 valve 5.4 without cam phasers. I think it could be rocker arms, loose timing chain, loose spark plug, or exhaust leak from my exhaust manifold. I do have one broken stud on the drivers side exhaust manifold. The sound comes and goes and then stops once the engine is warmed up. I am hoping that it is the exhaust . engine has 185,000 miles and has 5w 20 motorcraft oil with motorcraft filter with anti drain back. I even put in a half quart of ATF to slowly clean the engine. Any ideas?

  • Did you figure out what the noise is

  • @bkylefrederick I believe I have two sources: The exhaust manifold is leaking when cold and a stickiy follower. Both on the drivers side. I put marvel mystery oil in and it quieted it down a bit

  • @ericgrau123 I just got a reman 5.4l 3v replaced in my 2007 f-150 because the other one had a bad knocking and they found metal shavings and the reman makes almost the same kind of noise as yours in the video. i know for sure that they dont have a motorcraft filter on it. i will be going today to get the oil changed just to make sure but i was thinking leaking manifold also. the sound is loudest on drivers side wheel well. maybe an oil change to 5w-20 and motorcraft filter will quiet it
