Very simply put, this video will allow you to setup a wireless connection and obtain an IP address with your 1st Generation WDTV HD Media Player.

This requires additional software and hardware. See my blog for more details.

  • How it's done for the Gen 2 WDTV?

  • @tibormakai

Well, first you have to have the proper firmware installed. I have that available as an alternative download with my first video on "installing custom firmware..." THEN, the software included with this video may or may not work with the 2nd gen units. I have heard that the 2nd gen custom firmware has better support for wireless devices built-in. So you may get lucky and just plug in your device (assuming you are running custom firmware) and it works... But that is doubtful....

  • @tibormakai

Short answer is try it... But you have to have custom firmware installed first. My tutorial on installing Custom Firmware does work with Gen 2 units, you just have to download a different package from my website.

From there, you can try to follow this tutorial exactly but you are in uncharted waters (for me at least) as I only own a Gen 1 unit.

Wish I could be of more help : )

  • I already have a wired connection and an IP address, my problem is that I can't get the streaming right. I can't wait for the tutorial to do so, great work Roman!

  • @la0zboi

Thanks! The streaming tutorial will be coming soon :)... I work full-time and am in school full-time so finding time for this can get a bit tricky lol...

Also, just a thought, but I think like 95% of this is done from your PC with your thumbdrive plugged in, so (if it all works), you shouldn't have to do too much running back and forth. I will still make up a text file though.

    Cheers!

  • This is the first video I have done without a text file :), but I will make one up and put it in the new download pack. Please direct all future comments to my blog page for this. See the video description for the info. I am trying to keep comments in there for the time being, that way when people visit there is a nice Q&A section they can look through =). Two Stories! I thought having mine in another room was a pain lol. Also, do you have the correct USB network adapter?

  • Hey mate. Just wondering, do you have the steps in this video written in a file? It's much easier to follow a tech file than a video sometimes - especially when the PC is 2 stories away from the TV and WD.

Thanks heaps for putting this together too. I'm hoping it works fine for me.
