First Sea Lord welcomes aircraft carrier decision

First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Jonathon Band, has welcomed the announcement made yesterday, Wednesday 25 July 2007, that the Royal Navy are to receive two new 65,000 tonne aircraft carriers. The decision, announced by Defence Secretary Des Browne in Parliament , will see two new ships in service by 2014 and 2016 respectively. The aircraft carriers will be named HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales. Admiral Band said: "This confirms the Government's intended policy to maintain the Royal Navy as a global force with the ability to take air power anywhere around the world."

I agree with duriallsagod, these carriers will be great. However a massively insufficient defence budget means that we will not have the destroyers to protect them and the aircraft to embark on them. Perhaps if we had a sensble government and pulled out of the futile wars, then we might have a navy in the future. At the moment it looks set to be just two giant undefended targets.

hes talking bullshit...thes 2 new carriers will be the best carriers in the world, but with budget cuts to the navy we wont have enough destroyers to protect them
