After acquiring 4 - 3TB drives Pat decided to build a DIY NAS box. His options are a (fairly) low power pc. Should he go with http://lime-technology.com/ or http://www.freenas.org? After tweeting his dilema the Twitter-verse exploded with options and suggestions, from ZFSguru and NAS4Free, to EEC memory and more. We talk about a few of them in the video and, yes, we'll build one soon!

    lol "backups"

For the majority of us "home users", the NAS is the backup.

Sure, the important stuff gets saved somewhere but for those terabytes of HD videos and other junk, Raid5 is all the protection I'm willing to spend. I'm not running a business with mad cash flow.

FreeNAS, NAS4FREE and ZFSGuru cannot expand pool.

You cannot add a new disk to a raidz* set.

Either use Unraid or by a Synlology or QNAP device.

I did... I liked it, but I still think OMV is way way better.

On a UPS... YES!!!. I seldomly need to use the OCE option, but bare in mind that when running short of space, one adds another disk, and expands onto it... But it is a must for me when it is needed... Say once every 6 months... I dont have the budget to buy 8 or 16 4TB disks all at one... it comes with time... :-)

So you do Online Capacity Expension with no backups? So if an error occurs during expending you loose ALL your data. Is your server also on an UPS?

Zfsguru here also. You can add a vdev to an pool, but that is not optimal. Glad i left u raid behind me..

no backup, We are talking 8tb+, who has 16tb lying around to make a backup of that kind of data at home? Online Capacity Expansion is important to me as one is constantly in need of 'upgraded storage space'. Having a backup would be the best option though, then anything would work... :-)

How did you install it? Or are you running from a liveCD? I tried Freenas 8.3 and didn't had such problems. But i don't like the interface so i use nas4free and zfsguru now.
