A short intro to Wersbeek - Bekkevoort (population of 5,826), Belgium, the town where I grew up. The first mention of the name of Wersbeek, my town (Varsebece) dates from 1225.
The Apse (front part of church) and crossing was build in 1747. The tower was build in 1848. The church is surrounded by the old cemetery and the 2nd World War monument remembering the man who were killed by the Germans. Several restored historical buildings face the church. The old butchery, the parsonage and a former cafe.
The town survived many hardships. There where times of famine, disease and wars during it's history.
The 80 year wars of 1568-1648 (religious wars) between the Calvinists (what is now the Netherlands) and the Catholics. Then the French occupation from 1804 to 1814 when the battle at Waterloo (another Belgian town) ended Napolion's reign. And then we had the 1st (1914-1918) and 2nd (1940-1945) German occupations.
We end our short walk at the foot of the Wijndriesstraat (Vineyard street) at the foot of the hill where a vineyard ones grew. Now it is covered with apple trees and pastures.
