My name is David Berner. I first picked up a sarangi in April of 2009. When i made this video i didn't know how to play sarangi, or any hindustani classical music. But after i made this video i started learning sarangi technique and raag very seriously from Ravdeep Singh (UK), and Zohaib Hassan Khan (Pakistan) through skype. I strongly recommend either of them as teachers of sarangi, i've been lucky enough to learn from both. I also play many other instruments in my improvisatory band "SunanuS", it's members include Eric Shepherd and composer Carolyn Yarnell. Samples can be found on myspace.com/davidberner, be warned though, my other music is very harsh and not for most people. all the best - Dave

For sarangi lessons (so you can sound way better than this i do in this video) you can send any inquiries for Ravdeep Singh to raagtime@gmail.com and for Zohaib Hassan Khan to zohaibhassan.zebi@gmail.com . I feel lucky to have met both of these great players, let alone learn from them.

  • to tell the truth, i'd rather listen to this than the Sarangi Master Randhir Singh, (look him up). this has a lot more emotion to it, and has a definately good sound to it. don't let the man get you down. Peace.

  • @TheHippieartist I love Randhir Singh Ji, we have two totally different styles, he is a professional musician playing a folk sarangi, I play a classical sarangi, and will never reach his skill level. Thanks for appreciating my unique stylings. Peace.

  • I'm not sure I full understand this music. But it certainly captured my attention. I couldn't stop the video ... I just had to listen to all of it. It had me in a trace-like state. Whatever it is, it sounds like it's really, really, REALLY hard to play. Amazing.

  • NICE........VERY RELAXING

  • David, This is the sort of thing I find soothing. No tabla. Maybe just a Tanpura drone? I am tempted to accuse you of lying when you say you can't play Sarangi. But just in case you're not.... Well done.

  • haunting - the music of my ancestors.... makes me want to cry -

  • where did you buy the sarangi from?

  • wow amazing ..

  • dude this is amazing! do you play other Bowed instruments? just out of interest cause im looking to buy one of these and i can play most stringed instruments but i havent actually played things using a bow before....i've played cello and double bass but just plucking it.....

  • good job! i've just started to learn sarangi now in india. i'm a violin player :)

  • I have looked around, but have not seen a similar question...the sarangi that you play looks gorgeous. Where did you purchase this beauty? Thanks for my first introduction <3

  • You're really very good and passionate when playing .. Thumbs up from an Indian Raag-lover.
