about 90% of the worms are in the top 10% are in the middle thats worm eggs or some lost worms the bottom layer is the castings you want, buy the way there is a trick to remove the worms and take the castings, just remove the worms along with the castings put them close to fresh food and soil and after some time they will just move to the better place :)

If you want to screen it and the compost is too wet, let the bin sit to let it dry. The worms will be okay as long as you don't keep it dry for a long time. Also, stop feeding. It'll make harvesting easier.

this (and part 2) is the most comprehensive description I've come across in 2 years. I will definitely try this set-up.

How long did it take the worms to make this much castings?

Have you thought of using a mesh and just shaking the castings from the worms?
You should let it set for a couple of days in a bin with airholes at the top. Put a slice of Cantaloupe in there so if any hatchlings spring up or other vermis make it through - they will congregate to the melon and just below it. Also - once it is dryer - take a 1/8th screen (I make a wood frame for mine with the screen in the middle), and do a panning for gold method with it into a bucket, wheel barrel, tub, etc...You will have a much finer product, and be able to save your worms easier.

the worms were too stuck in the castings and it was so damp, it would be like trying to sift clumps of worms and mud.
