Maybe you should have been arguing its stupid for ANY track to have steel beams next to it, instead of saying "well they did it in your home country so it isn't stupid!". Yes, it WAS stupid, any track designed like this is stupid.

@pbmdh did it ever cross your mind why these steel beams are there? They hold the rooftop that covers the ice channel. and the roof contributes to the safety of the track. Yes, you are right when you say that the design could have been better. but to describe the design als simply 'stupid' is an exaggeration.

as a british colombian (canadian) i was completely at a loss for words when i saw this happen live. and i remember thinking what the hell are unprotected steel posts doing at the end of the track like that?! and if i remember correctly it almost took a couple of other people being seriously hurt on that corner before anything was done about it. i really feel for the family of that poor guy. this was completely preventable and should have never happened.
