Unsu: which one do you prefer?

There is no comparison really- the first one is a good rendition of the original Kata, and the second is a good rendition of the bastardized sports version. Of course the first is Karate and the second is sports. The first represents something that at least has roots in traditional Karate, the next is synthetic cream, with sugar, coloring, additives, preservatives and the rest of it.

It's not a very delicate term, but I'm with you. I can barely watch this stuff. Even the way these guys bow is self-important and showy.

I prefer the '91 version with it's raw energy & 'fight' compared to the 2st Century version of 'let's see if my delays can squeeze more points out of these naive judges'. To be honest I think the excessive delays need to be stamped out. It seems way over the top, disrespectful to the judges and to be honest.........anyone can do it. It takes no skill what so ever. Just a preparedness to make everyone wait for you.

Carlo Fugazza...I am myself, was formed in traditional Shotokan Karate, and although I admire this modern performers with their flashy moves, I prefer the traditional one, indeed.

Overly dramatic. What's up with the dramatic pause? WKF is a joke. You want to see unsu, Youtube Nakayama doing Unsu.

the second one is better OFCOURSE

¡¡¡LUCCIO MAURINO POR SUPUESTO!!!
-
Opinione personale ovviamente.

Great post, I couldn't agree more.

After a year revisiting here, sadly, I must repeat with more emphasis what I wrote back then " The comments in favor of sports karate kata show the huge gap between the sports karate people and that of traditional budoka. It doesnt matter if it is obvious to the traditional karateka that most of todays kata champions would hurt themselves if they hit an aggressor with their techniques. What matters is how pretty they look according to the dubious aesthetic standards that have evolved."

I couldn't agree more. The average karateka today is no longer able to identify and appreciate the features of a realistic performance in karate - I'm afraid this reflects a decline in the perception and practice of our beloved martial art.
