One has to wonder, while Avatar has made more money than Titanic, did it sell more tickets, because movie tickets are obviously more expensive now then they were 10 years ago.

Avatar may have topped Titanic, but knowing Titanic will be re-released in 3D I'm pretty sure it will regain its #1 spot once again! XD

I will never watch avatar. It's all smoke and mirrors. Titanic was based on true events and had no CGI bullshit because it didn't need it. Titanic is, hands down, best movie ever. And you can't argue with that

@jasonsadventure Fact is the general consensus is that titanic is better, look at reviews and accolades. That is all. You are right, you can't compare them but Titanic is more impactful.

check-it, aside from pointing out logical flaws in your assertions (no offense) i'm saying as follows:

1 - avatar is awesome and i guess titantic was awesome as well, but they are apples and oranges. comparisons is like arguing whether peanut crunch or butter pecan is better ice cream (the answer is butter pecan)

2 - avatar is original, deep and exciting, not just visually stunning.

3 - avatar is the current box office champ... and i'm like way good with that.

LOL what are you trying to say kid ? That Avatar is the best and most important movie ever ? Bottom line Titanic sold many more tickets than Avatar. And Leo was already an Oscar nominee when he did Titanic, his career had already launced. You are obviously too young to remember the buzz Titanic had around, since then the only thing that has ever come close to that amount of hype and buzz is Dark knight. And as I said Avatar did not win many Oscars and lost best picture to a low budget film.

check-it, the societal, media and economic contexts all determine how a movie will perform at the box office and no one knows how titanic would compete in today media context, cnn included. it could completely bomb.

why? cuz the country is not the same as it was in 1997 during an economic boom and the dot-com take off.

btw, launching dicaprio's career hardly counts as a societal impact that "has never been matched"
