***LYRICS***

We were born before the wind
Also younger than the sun
Ere the bonnie boat was won as we sailed into the mystic
Hark, now hear the sailors cry
Smell the sea and feel the sky
Let your soul and spirit fly into the mystic

And when that fog horn blows I will be coming home
And when the fog horn blows I want to hear it
I don't have to fear it

And I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
And magnificently we will flow into the mystic

When that fog horn blows you know I will be coming home
And when that fog horn whistle blows I got to hear it
I don't have to fear it

And I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
And together we will flow into the mystic
Come on girl...

  • @kimh1016 Unless you have heard every artist making music today you cannot say that.

  • Im 31 years old and would say I am so thankful the Lord gave me such and appreciation for music. I have no doubt in my mind when I say this is what music really is.....when you feel it. All these artist from my generation dont have a clue what real music is and I am so proud to see my daughters sing along to beautiful music like this and not the garbage from today! Thanks to the good Lord and my dad for showing me what real music is about! Van will ALWAYS be a part of my family!!!!

  • It means a lot to me that Van wasn't perfect in his singing of this song. It's not perfect, but the emotion that came through when they heard him sing it is indescribable. I picture him saying "No, let me get another take" and the sound engineer sitting there with his mouth open saying "No, that's the take. That's it." It's so raw, so real. They lyrics, while they mean a great deal to me, clearly mean more to Van. That's why this is my all time favorite. Always will be.

  • There is so much passion and meaning in the lyrics, it makes me want to cry :'D

  • love this one

  • No doubt about the fact that the vocals on this song are first rate, among the best of all time perhaps... but what keeps me coming back to this song over and over again is the sax.

  • @AmolaTerra - Amen. There are some songs that just cannot be covered. This is one. Every cover of this I've heard makes me cringe. Can't replicate the SOUL.

  • Best male vocal ever? I think maybe.......

  • ABSOLUTE CLASS !! As if there was any other answer ! Love your music Van, to me over the last 20 plus years got most of your stuff on viinyl and seen you live 6 timses in England ! Not always in the summertime !!! The Man !!!!!!

  • weird how everyone looked older than their age back then compared to today. He's 25 in this image! Duane Allman died at 24, Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison at 27 and they all looked like they were well into their 30s. Guess we're just more pampered nowadays. Less responsibility to age us I suppose...always seemed strange to me though. Oh yeah classic tune!
