In the first full season of his second stint as Everton manager, Howard Kendall seemed again to be re-fashioning Everton into a top-flight force in this, the last ever Division One season prior to the inception of the Premiership in August 1992. During an autumn run which saw them win 11 out of 13 in all competitions, the Toffees, resplendent in the "lightning bolt" away kit, travelled to the vacuous surroundings of the old Stamford Bridge in late September. Despite leading through a John Ebbrell strike, Everton only had themselves to blame for not coming away with better than the 2.2 draw which was only salvaged thanks to a last minute Peter Beardsley equaliser. Despite the evident imperiousness of Beardsley - too often overlooked as one of the finest players ever to wear the Royal Blue - the disharmony in the ranks that had earlier contributed to Colin Harvey's downfall and would yet stunt Kendall's progress, was still in evidence; particularly between Martin Keown and Andy Hinchcliffe in the aftermath of Chelsea's second goal which had seen the diminutive Dennis Wise outjump them both to score.
