Mary Cassatt lived most of her life in France where she became a friend of Edgar Degas and exhibited along the impressionists, but she is actually an American painter, born in Pennsylvania in 1844. Her family was well off, and she spent much of her youth traveling through Europe. In fact, her first introduction to impressionism was at the Paris World's Fair in 1855, when she was 11. The art exhibition included both Pissarro and Degas, who would become her friends and mentors. She moved to Paris in 1866, with her mother and friends acting as chaperones. Women weren't allowed to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, so she depended on private study. She was brilliant with pastels and is known for her tender "mother and child" series. By 1914 she was almost blind and had to give up painting. She died near Paris in 1926 at the age of 82. Music is John Tavener's "The Protecting Veil," performed by Yo-Yo Ma.

  • Seeing your Mary Cassatt video brings back memories of my high school days (1969-72) when my teacher Mr. Jerry Collins in Tacoma,Wa. Linclon H.S. taught us to embrace theold art classic artist. To this day my fondness for art began there. It was good to see your video. I remember a lot of these prints I have not seen in awhile (shame on me).

  • placed into my playlist of Mary Cassat, thanks John
