I am shooting a black powder rifle for the first time. My totally cool brother and sister in law gave my totally awesome husband a Flint Lock Black Powder Rifle for Christmas! And the let me shoot it!!! How cool is that?

  • I think you will have better success if you keep the touchhole clear of powder. You want to avoid a "fuse" effect and allow the fire from the priming to hit the main charge with a minimum of delay. I just prick the hole to make sure that there is no crud in it, and dump some powder in the pan without worrying about tapping it, though it will be marginally faster in the prime is concentrated next to the barrel.

Ideally, the frizzen covers up the touchhole when closed, to keep the hole clear.

  • When they put the flash powder in they probably forgot to turn it on it's side and tap it a few times. That gets some flash powder in the little hole and prevents a hang fire. At least thats what I was thought to do.

  • were you using BP substitute? (ie Pyrodex, 777 et cetera)

  • i replayed the part where her head almost breaks off of her neck like 18 times... my neck started to hurt.

  • Is she single...shes cute and I like a girl with a gun

  • I think I hit the tree..

  • jeez, that thing almost knocked her over...and I coulda taken a nap during that delay lol

  • lol at the delay

  • now i see why that priest invented the precussion cap.

  • Ah I hate it when there's a delay from igniting the blackpowder in that little chamber and the main charge, too bad it happens most of the time.

  • you could be right about that but it's just the way I learned. I prick the hole every time as well and i rarely have a hang fire. That's very important because I hunt white tail deer every year with my .50 flintlock. Black powder is my favorite hunting season actually.
