The scheduled maiden voyage later this month of a Chinese-made supertanker has reignited debate over whether or not China's navy should possess an aircraft carrier. The mammoth "Xin Buyang" oil-tanker is currently being prepared to take to the sea at a shipyard near the southern city of Guangzhou.
Displacing 350,000 tons - more than three times as much as the biggest American aircraft carrier - the supertanker is well over 1,000 feet long and has a deck the size of three football fields.
The ship's makers say it's built to withstand the worst weather and can circumnavigate the globe in just 60 days. It is also certified to operate without a pilot in many ports due to its advanced automatic navigational and control systems.
For supporters of a Chinese aircraft carrier the fact that such an advanced ship - and of such scale - can be built with indigenous Chinese technology is a signal the country is also capable of building and launching its own aircraft carrier.

This ship is as good as a used ship because the ship was built by the Russians and the chinese refurbished it. It remains to be seen how good the electronics is going to be on this ship. Also one carrier won't do much aside from PR. You need support ships surrounding it like a carrier strike group. The PLAN overall is still a work in progress.

@pawoon but how far away, with how much power, and at what speed? i couldnt give a damn if you can do that with a weak little missile, lets see you try with an icbm, or any very large ballistic missile. there not that easy to guide, and fortuanently, a ship is an unpredictable MOVING target

Trouble sending a rocket to space? Chinese sent 85 satallites for many countires, Nigeria, Venezuela, brazil, ...some weight 100 tons shulter. BE SMART, to hit a carrier China can do it 3,000 miles away, actual is 16,000 km away to be exect, u don't know modern war

@fdoca your argument can be given about any ship if that argue were correct, but let me give you a bit of information. 1. when building something thats going to cost more that 1 billion dollars, my nation takes everything into consideration. your not going to get anywhere near it with anything, 2. chinas missile technology sucks, they have trouble sending a rocket 10 miles correctly. theyed have to get pretty damn close to a carrier to hit it,

@fdoca your stupid. you really are. i grew up around air craft carriers, and theres just about any question you can ask me about an air craft carrier that i can answer. air craft carriers are a key point in any fleet, and the strongest ship type in the world. have you ever heard of a ground to air defence missile? that elimanates your icbm fast. not to mention what china has is just a glorified oil tanker. we have 13 super carriers.
