I believe this lady's story completely but I believe this most certainly can happen again. In fact i believe it will happen again, though I don't think it will be based on race. I think it will be based on religion.
I don't understand how neighbors could do this to each other. We must understand the pain of people such as this lady. It is hopeful that such things will never happen again.
Lisa. I was speaking in general about neighbours. I don't think of this as specific to Germany. It can happen anywhere, and does. I think it is even worse now as people are more hard nosed and apathetic than ever. I am absolutely sure that a few German thugs were invloved, and a few decent Germans tried to help he Jews. The majority of people were just apathetic - cowards and opportunists - just like people are now, even in the United States.
I agree with you in all except the last sentence. Anti-semitism was always a problem, but the majority of the people were not apathetic in Germany. You have to understand that in the last free election, the nazis only won 38.4% of the vote. When Hitler took office in 1933, Dachau was opened-not for the Jews-but for political opponents, aka anyone who spoke out. An atmosphere of extreme fear was created right from the very beginning. If you wanted to resist, you would end up in Dachau yourself.
Lisa. Thank you. You are absolutely correct of course. I take back what I said in the last sentence. We can all keep on learning, and that includes me. :)
u were lucky that the nazis didnt catch u inside a synagogue during the pogrom, many synagogues with jews full during a serice were raided by nazis and they burnt the synagogue with all the jews inside during this pogrom in germany kristallnacht.
