Live version of 'Penicillin Blues' at Renfrew Ferry [June 2008]. Maggie Bell was born in Glasgow on 12 Jan 1945) and came from a musical family. As a teenager she sang with local dance bands, then went to Germany in the mid-sixties to sing at US airforce bases. Returning to Scotland, she and the band's guitarist Leslie Harvey, formed a new group called Power which later became Stone The Crows. They were managed by Mark London and Peter Grant, the man behind Led Zeppelin. After Leslie was accidentally electrocuted on stage in 1972, the heart went out of the group. They worked for a while with fellow Scots guitarist Jimmy McCulloch, but broke up after a year. Explains Maggie: "When Leslie died, it was never the same. The band continued for a while, then we agreed it was the end of an era. Colin Allen, our drummer, was offered a job with Focus and Jimmy joined Wings". This video clip is from the British Blues Quintet gig at 'the Ferry' - a British blues band formed in London in 2006 by five veteran UK blues musicians. Its members are Zoot Money (keyboards and vocals), Colin Allen (drums), MAGGIE BELL (vocals), Colin Hodgkinson (bass and vocals) and Miller Anderson (guitar and vocals).

  • Sorry, Paneeks1960 - Maggie WAS on EPTAS. Madeline Bell sang on Seems Like a Long Time, but Maggie duetted with Rod on the title track - I have an original release of the album (still listen to it) - both of them are named on the sleeve with the details ....

  • I think you may have gotten Maggie Bell confused with Madeline Bell. Madeline Bell sang on Rod's "Every Picture Tells A Story" song, not Maggie Bell. Just thought I send you this note of help.

  • Too bad she's never really gotten her props. Better voice than Janice. Would have been awesome to see them together.

  • I'm driving around listening to my ipod, enjoying Rod Stewart's Every Picture Tells a Story, when I wonder, for the first time after hundreds of listenings, who is that lady singing background? She's the one that really makes the song. And through the wonder of the internet I found her. Wow! She's amazing. I need to find out more about her.
