Nerska, Brighton Park, And Englewood Crossings In Chicago, IL. 12-1-09.

The first stop I made in the Chicago Terminal area was Nerska Crossing. The BNSF Chillicothe and CN Joliet Subdivisions cross the BRC here.

A manifest with NS power heads North on the BRC, with morning traffic already heavy on I-55 above it.

An IC SD40-2 running long hood forward takes a local North back to Hawthorne yard.

Traffic on all lines has been slow so far as Amtrak Lincoln Service 301 finally shows up after departing Chicago Union Station minutes ago. P42DC #30 is now working the Lincoln Service trains and two Amfleet coaches are in today's consist.

9:10AM-
Seen here at Brighton Park Crossing, the 74-car 59th Street container job moves South down the NS Chicago Junction Main. This train hopped onto the CJ using the Ash Street Connector. The NS and CSX Blue Island Subdivision pass through Ash Street just North. The CN Joliet Subdivision where Amtrak and Metra Heritage Corridor trains run crosses these lines here.

At this junction above street level, a manifest heads North on the NS main, ducking under the CTA Orange Line.

10:40AM-
Englewood Crossing is located on the far South Side of the city where the NS Chicago Subdivision crosses Metra's Chicago-Joliet Rock Island District. Despite the neighborhood's reputation of being bad, I still went to this junction. Long ago, there used to be a station here serving both lines. Most of the surrounding aura now is abandoned industrial land and hi-rise projects. The NS main if you didn't know passes through more familiar territory such as Hick Interlocking and Pine about 20 minutes East of here. The NS was quiet today and I intend on hanging around longer next time. Metra Rock Island Train 509 is about 10 minutes late into Gresham, the next stop.

Beautiful. I grew up on 47th and Western. My refuge was the 49th street tracks, before the stupid EL came. On a clear day just east of the Western Ave. viaduct you could see the spires of the Russian Orthodox Church, and when it was really clear you could see the Lake. To me this was the only frontier a city boy could feel. I walked the Western tracks one down to the stately Beverly Hills area to Longwood Drive. It was a heavy walk.

Ya know what's a great crossing. Western avenue on the BNSF Racetrack in Pilsen. Small general freight yard. U.P. intermodal yard seen from the platform. Lots of trains from BNSF, U.P., and I think NS uses the north/south track also. .
