Powles landed the Mk XIX safely, on inspection it was found to be completely undamaged. There is some debate over the recorded IAS, the instrument was checked & found to be faulty. The next fastest Spit dive was by a MK XI flown by Ft Lt Martindale. He put his aircraft in a 45 deg dive & hit 606 mph or 0.9 mach. The aircraft was still accelerating when the prop failed. Martindale then glided the plane for 20 miles before landing at Farnborough.

A Mk XIX PR Spit very nearly broke the sound barrier in 1951. An aircraft from 81 Sqn on meteorological duties in Honk Kong climbed to 51,550- setting the world record for a piston-engined aircraft in the process. Pilot Ft Lt Ted Powles subsequently encountered a problem with falling cabin pressure so he put the Spit in a dive. The Spit hit 690 mph or 0.94 mach in the dive. Powles had to push the stick FORWARD due to reversal of the ailerons at this immense speed, finally pulling out at 3000 ft.

Fantastic! Mk 19 PR Spit- the fastest of the breed at 460 MPH. Catch me if you can Me262! lol Thanks for posting, great stuff :)
Can this be flown for under $3000 an hour or is it just part of the hobby.

Hi there oh no this is not a hobby these machines are owned and mantained by the RAF this Spitfire was the last Spitfire ever to fly an offical RAF sortie in June 1957. Thanks for your comment. Lee.
