The reason the catch is so memorable is that it was in New York and it was one of the first World Series to be on television. There have been better plays. Still a great catch and Mays was arguably the best player ever. Also notable that any ballpark today doesn't have a center field fence that far away. It's literally not possible to make a play like that anymore.

@Jasc136 There's way more going on here than meets the eye. I'm now reading James S Hirsch's book' it dedicates an entire chapter to "the catch". Excellent, in-depth book. Cleveland was the odds-on favorite for the '54 Series. A major slugger, Wirtz was a bit slow around the bases. The Catch's importance was it was game 1. The Indians were about to blow the the Giants out. Mays' blindingly fast throw to 2nd base kept a run from scoring & stopped the Indians cold. Changed baseball forever.

I'm a lifelong Yankees fan and favorite Yankees players are Babe Ruth,Lou Gehrig,Joe Dimaggio,Whitey Ford, and Reggie Jackson but Willie Mays is the Greatest Player to ever play the game of MLB. The 1954 World Series also is my favorite.
The Yankees should have drafted him on their roster. He was a perfect NY Professional Baseball Player all variety wrapped up in one.

@Jasc136 It was the World Series of 1954. If Mays had either missed the catch or made a bad throw back to the infield, the Indians would have scored and likely won the game. You can go to wiki and look up "1954 World Series" or "The Catch (baseball)"

Willie has said that even before the ball got to him, he was thinking about the throw. This was a 23-year-old guy... although not in his first World Series.
The best ones never look like they're working hard, even though they are. A pair of later San Francisco sports legends, Joe Montana and Jerry Rice, were the same way.

@theivin Yeah For sure, I would say Griffey was right was right up there with him as well.

love this play

@jblock654 The game was tied at the time. If he doesn't catch it, the Indians score at least a run. Also, Vic Wertz was not known for his speed, so an inside-the-park home run was not at all likely.
best center fielder whose ever put on a mit.
