I played this on KPIG radio once, and Sleepy John, the host, humorously remarked "That's the most depressing song I've ever heard!" To me it's not about sadness, it's about Buddhism and the wheel of desire. No matter how much we have, we delusionally believe that if things were just a little bit different, if we had more money, or a more fulfilling job, or more love and sex, we would be happy. But the unequivocal truth is that whenever we achieve something our expectations reset, and we wind up with a whole new set of anxieties and longings that pretty much bring us back to where we started. In other words, the road of life doesn't really go anywhere, it just makes circles within circles within circles. Somehow we never seem to be able to figure this out, even though we all experience it over and over throughout our lives. If we were more sensible creatures we would focus on the drive, and not the destination.
People often ask me, so I will disclose, the story is essentially true. I really was a lawyer, and I still am (unfortunately.) I did hitch-hike through Morocco, but long ago when I was only 19. And there was a snake-lady who taught me a great deal, but she worked in a medical office and not the circus.
