It is incredibly rare that an issue be sent straight to a direct public vote. How can you possibly expect the rights of the individual (such as yourself) to be protected if at any time a majority could vote to have them taken away? This is why we have a constitution with a set of laws to protect those rights. If every issue called into question could pass/fail by a majority public vote, there would be no use for a constitution and society would fall into chaos and ultimately lead to tyranny.
