This video shows a Varilight dimmable fluorescent light being cycled from off to fully on to off. The light consumes 20 watts and gives as much light as a typical 100 watt tungsten bulb. The manufacturers also claim that it will last up to 16,000 hours.

Note that the camera adjusts the light it sees, so you'll see the background change as the bulb is cycled. I should say that I've had one in parallel with a normal tungsten bulb and the only difference is that the traditional bulb can go slightly lower in light levels.

I've just ordered a lot more of these.

  • PETER42Y i couldnt agree with u more. CFL's not only give off horrible light but just the way it looks is not attractive. Dont worry incandecents are not going away. only the ones that are less energy efficient. They're making incandecents that save energy but gives off the same light we're used to seeing in the old traditional bulbs.

  • i do not like fluorescent light. It sucks. Reading is harder with fluorescent light. People with good eyesight want and will impose on the rest of sucks those lamps that suck.

~i prefer traditional light bulbs, tungsten ones.

  • I've always wondered how these bulbs worked. I don't have any lamps with a dimmer so I didn't want to buy a dimmable CFL for myself.

Thank you for sharing your video.
