It is said that human eyesight is complex. Two eyes look at different things and different scenes simultaneously but brains organize them. To put it more succinctly, two eyes, right and left are constantly at "binocular rivalry"(battle for views). And brains are mediator.
This battle for views for eyes fascinated us. Therefore, we have decided to make it our theme.
By looking into two kaleidoscopes which are attached to a high resolution display, the viewer using both right and left eyes can see two different imageries. Those two images sometimes look like dancing, sometimes one image taking over the other, and sometimes assimilated as one. They get mixed in viewer's brain and cause strange yet curious sensation. The battle for views confirmed.
This work creates beautiful kaleidoscopic images with high resolution. We used more than 300ppi display which was never used before.
The video for this device was made while our experimentations were going on. Every clip was meticulously selected by calculation in order to induce the binocular rivalry more effectively.
One of the merits of this device is that it is continuous. The viewers can experience the fascination of their eyes' "battle for views" with endless display since kaleidoscopes and views never stop their movement.
