it's one of the important themes of the book. cutting it out of the movie would be stupid.

Actually, most of it was in the German version I saw today.
Did they cut out everything in the English version?
It shows pretty good the mood of the generation that grew up after WW II in Germany.
Many were not caring for their past, but some asked and got no anwers...
