Presenter Neil Clingerman lays out how Japanese animation got to look (and move) like anime. "Believe it or not, anime used to look something like Disney."

Sir, you are a gentleman and I sincerely thank you for your courteous response.

I grew up with anime starting in 1963 with Tetsuwan Atom and I later became personal friends with the likes of Osamu Tezuka and Kasahiko Kato (Monkey Punch). I was also a neighbor of Ward Kimball's and learned a lot about the "good, bad and the ugly" of the mouse. I spent 12 years with Disney to boot. Again, thank you for your very courteous reply.

  • @vawlkee51 I take full responsibility for that mistake due to a misinterperation of a part of the Ghibli produced documentary "Yasou Otsuka's Joy of Animation" (approximate name) where the book was implied to be a study guide for the Toei animators along with mentions of the 9 old men. We also made note of it in the comments. Also Blair was at Disney but left after the 1941 strike.. I apologise for the mistakes, and please don't take it personally.

  • Neil totally lost any credibility with me when he said Preston Blair was one of the 9 old men at Disney!

Blair was with Metro, NOT Disney.

Crawl back under your rock Clingerman!

  • @GojiGuy Tezuka's more experimental stuff should have been included, but again time was an issue. I think that Toei, Miyazaki and Otsuka are more influential which is why I focused on them.

Whats a good example of "sakuga" style animation from Tatsunoko productions / Speed Racer? Time was a big issue here, we literally just had enough time to cover what we did without talking about everything that makes anime great.

  • My question is will 3D animation die out because i miss 2D animation from America, probably the reason that i'm so inclined towards Japananimation as i am now

  • Surprised Maha GOGOGO and Gatchaman and other Tatsunoko Products weren't included here as well as Tezuka Animation's more experimental films from the 70s. But I guess you can't cover everything! Good stuff! Very informative!

  • Great documentary, some of the commentary was annoying , but otherwise informative!

  • I often watch these videos over and over snd always get more from them each time.

  • I have learned so much from the videos. So much valuable information.Ive loved japanese anime since the 60s and have nit been able to learn as much as I have from these guys

  • @TehDarkPrince I sadly was wrong mentioning Preston Blair, came from a misunderstanding of a documentary I watched about Otsuka and Toei animatiors.

I hoped I had said Mary Blair, she's on par with Tezuka in terms of influence, the American animation industry owes her a ton and I'm sure some of the Japanese acknowledge her influence.
