HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Have you tried to teach him to pick something up? For example you can use a hat und put some molasses on the brim. The horse will probably take it immediately - then you say "take" und use the "clicker". Repeat it a few times and after a while you don't use molasses any more but give a treat after he took the hat and you used the clicker.
Just an idea :-)
