Both Richard Patrick and Brian Liesegang were in Nine Inch Nails... As in part of the band, they played guitar. Both left before the recording of The Downward Spiral started.

I heard somewhere that they used to be in Nine Inch Nails in the late 80's and early 90's as trent Reznor's back up band or something like that , thats why they kind of have the same sound
