  • It is a very special plant. I have not heard any information about nitrogen fixation w/ comfrey, although I do know that it is a heavy N feeder and it will accumulate all of that nitrogen in its foliage. So if you're working the leaves backing into the soil then it would add nitrogen, if you're just growing the plant and not returning the plant material to the soil then I would say the opposite.

  • I like to bury the comfrey a little under the straw mulch I use so it doesn't dry out on the surface and lose a lot of the nitrogen.

  • That looks like the common sterile Bocking 14 variety. If it has bluish flowers then it's actually Symphytum uplandicum not Symphytum officinale, which is smaller and has yellowish cream colored flowers.

  • I'm with you on the comfrey, bro. Great herb to have around. I started with one I got from a friend two years ago, split it into 4 last year, and then into about 50 this winter! I'm just dropping my first round this week actually. Guess that's why this video caught my eye. I've heard that comfrey is nitrogen-fixing too. Any info to the contrary? Seems too good to be true.

  • Great to the point presentation of the use of Comfrey as a "mulch." I especially enjoyed hearing the additional uses covered. Great job & nice work on all your plantings, too.
