Civilization Attributes
* Stronger Buildings: Byzantine buildings are 10% stronger, meaning they have 10% more hit points than other civ's buildings. This percentage increases as the ages progress, 20% in the Feudal age, 30% in castle, and 40% in imperial. This will increase the amount of time you have to defend yourself of the attack.
*Cheap Counter Units: Byzantine has the ability to produce counter units at a 25% less cost. These units are listed as skirmishers, camels, and pikemen. If attacked off guard or early on, this bonus will come in handy as you can create a defense on the fly.
* Fire Ships: Fire ships are similar to RoR fire galley in that they are great for close combat with ships in the near vicinity. Byzantine fire ships pack 20% more the punch than other civs' fire ships. Their use weighs more defensively though than offensively.
* Cheap Imperial: Since the Byzantine are the most advanced civ in the game, it is only fitting that they don't have to pay as much to upgrade to the final age. The upgrade costs 33% less than other civs, meaning this is a fast ironing civilization.
Unique Unit
Cataphract: A heavy cavalry unit useful in attacking archers and siege. This unit's most useful function is attacking infantry, where they get a +5 attack edge. Be weary of large groups of pikemen and close proximity to castles and towncenters against this unit.
Xiphoid's Analysis of the Byzantine:
The Byzantine civ is the most versatile civilization in the game. You've got all cavalry, archers, infantry, and ships to your disposal. If you find yourself in trouble, the cheaper counter units come in handy, however they're pretty cheap in the first place. The Byzantine navy is quite strong, granted it's not as dominant as Viking or Saracen. I see this civ as a defensive one, good for wonder building and late Imperial attacks. The cheaper Imperial upgrade should come in handy and allow you to get there before your opponent. Take this advantage and be the first one to get those trebuchets out. Taking out key towncenters and castles of the enemy will certainly sway the tables to your side. Trebuchets are crucial in this game and if you've got them first you can really do some damage.
Ensemble's Analysis of the Byzantine:
The Byzantines are missing only nine technologies - fewer than anyone else (China is in second place with eleven.) The Byzantines have every ship and dock technology, every monastery technology, and all available armor upgrades. They are also the only civilization that can build every nonsiege superunit, including arbalests, paladins and champions (the best archer, cavalry, and infantry, respectively). The only units that the Byzantines cannot make are the heavy scorpion and siege onager. You can counter almost anything that other civs throw at you.

The AI that resigned was probably sitting just next to another AI and his villagers were being slaughtered by militia. It's not uncommon on random maps with random starting positions.
The Byzantines are probably the best civ for newbies to the game. They have the most versatility and best newbie bonuses. But actually they are rather fun to play by any level player, since their ability to adapt to certain situations is very good.
