We found another discarded VHS and we save it for posterity. Here you see Xavier Cugat Orchestra playing BIM, BAM, BUM from the great Puerto Rican composer Noro Morales. Lina Romay is the lead singer.
Xavier Cugat was born in January 1, 1900 in Girona, Spain. He considered himself a catalan. He died October 27, 1990. His parents moved to Cuba when he was a child. He learned to play the violin at an early age. A reporter asked Perez Prado what he would like to be when he reached fame? His answer was I will like to reach the fame of Xavier Cugat. In 1915 he moved with his family to New York. Later on he went to work for the Los Angeles Times as a cartoonist. All his caricature has been syndicated. Somehow he got involved in music and formed an orchestra to play at the New York Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Miguelito Valdes became the main singer of the orchestra. When Miguelito left then Tito Rodriguez took over. His first marriage was with Abbe Lane in 1952. They performed together until he divorced her in 1964. Then he married the spicy Charo on August 7, 1966 when he was 66. He and Charo went on a worldwide tour. Later they separated. The he moved back to his native Cataluna. He died at age 90 in Barcelona, Spain.

  • On the Maracas, Catalino Rolon. My dad. He started as percussionist and dancer for Xavier Cugat. Later on he moved on to start his own orchestra then became a promoter. He was the booking agent and talent recruiter for the New York Palladium. He discovered and got many artist started in the business such as Celia Cruz and others. On his last days in the business he produced numerous bands of wish some became real popular and some still playing. Google his name for more info. RIP papi.

  • Correction: He did not discover Celia Cruz. When Celia came to New York she was already a great artist knows all over the world. She started in SONORA MATANCERA in the late 40’s.

  • This has to be who Betty Boop was based off of

  • Wonderful band full of fun! Would anyone have any info on enigmatic George or Jorge Cordoba virtuoso guitarist who played a while in XC's band? There's little info out there on him except recordings Shades of Django and Guitarra Exotica. The wonderful Lina Romay passed away last year. RIP

  • @latinosomos You are absolutely right. My dad passed away when I was very young. All I know is bits and pieces of what he used to tell me and of what I find on the internet. I do know he was a talent scout that brought a lot of musicians from cuba to the U.S. but not Celia Cruz. Once she was in NY he became her agent and close friend. He even gave her hand away at her small wedding. I recently visited your channel, thanks for making all this history availble.

    Sincerely

    Cesar Rolon

  • Lina Romay 1919-2010. She was a wonderful star from the 1940's who could sing and dance brilliantly, and we can see her charm and beauty here in this clip.
