Dan O' Bannon is Pinback, the guy with the beard. :) ... O' Bannon is the one who feeds the alien and then fights with him. Look at 0:16, 0:23, 1:47, 1:56 and 2:07.

This was before the idea of terraforming worlds became more feasible to conceptualize. But honestly, if you could blow up worlds in the name of mankind, wouldn't you?

The trailer doesn't do the film justice. It makes it look like a standard SF movie, carefully avoiding all the brilliant humor throughout the film.

Not hard to see why people didn't get the idea that it's a comedy.

I love how it's almost the opposite of most space films; instead of gung-ho NASA types, they've got a crew of slacker/grad student types doing a monotonous job, eating the same thing every day, getting on each other's nerves and squabbling because they've been at it 20 years with no end in sight. You know, like real life....

It's basically about some guys who've been in space for 20 years, bored out of their minds, and their job is to find the planets that are uninhabitable, and blow them up. Something goes wrong...... A dated but funny movie. Kind of a lonely movie too.
