  • Great Video i am only 17 but i miss seeing them come in and out of Fox Field. the only thing i got left is the P-2V neptunes.

  • Be glad that you still have a tanker station. They frecently moved the local tanker station to Santa Maria.

  • minor thing, but it's actually a PB4Y-2 Privateer

  • In 1951 the Navy eliminated the Patrol Bomber category and the designation of the Privateers became P4Y-2. A number of Privateers were transferred to the Coast Guard and were redesignated P4Y-2G. These Privateers had their turrets removed. The nose and waist turret openings were glazed over.

  • Really great video. I miss both the air attack base in Goleta and the old air tankers like these. Keep up the good work!

  • This is just the beginning. I just digitized all of my old VHS tapes and will be producing lots of clips.

  • Wish you had more videos of the Privateers in action. This is the only video I have found of them involved in fire bombing. My great uncle flew them in the Pacific during WW-II. The PB4Y was one of the forgotten heroes of the Pacific War.

  • My Father, LtJg Norris A Roberts was a member of Navy VP-23 HURICANE HUNTERS and flew the Privateer out of Pensacola, Florida patrolling the eastern seaboard, Guantanamo Bay Cuba to Tuley Greenland. He loved the PB4Y-2, and had many stories of his adventures flying weather recon & submarine intradiction missions. Thanks for posting this video of one ot the last privateers flying.

  • My dad ( James M. Frink Jr. ) was a noise gunner in the Privateer during WWII. He was assigned to VPB-109, crew #15, plane 501. He used to tell some great stories about the plane and how it made him feel while they were on patrol. He passed away in 2005 while in his deer stand.

  • Fugly.

  • avbug!

  • My Dad flew one in WWII. This very plane was based here in the Phoenix area once - my Dad was visiting. I had arranged with the owner (Serge) to let us see it. When we pulled in, Dad saw the tail - he had a tear in his eye. I got in thru the nosewheel & opened up the plane. Serge said a day earlier he installed an engine - we could have gone up! My Dad passed away last year. At his funeral we placed his Privateer model near him. Last I heard this tanker was bought by the CAF for restoration.

  • I grew up in Greybull, WY and was able to get up close to them all since my grandfather worked there. I hope you have more of the PB4Y-2 to upload! Thanks for sharing!

  • I realized that it was a Coast Guard aircraft because of the removal of turrets, and I knew that the Coast Guard Privateers were P4Y-2's, but I didn't realize the Navy had redesignated theirs as such too. Also, I just didn't put two and two together. Thanks for the clear-up.
