Information Lyrics Text and translation For Peter Philips (1560? 1561 - 1628) Ave Verum Corpus are below:

Short Version:

Peter Philips was born either in 1560 or 1561. A Catholic who had trained as a choirboy at St Paul's Cathedral. There is some evidence that subsequently he was a pupil of Byrd.

He fled England aged 21 fearing persecution and never returned. During his life he was (after Byrd) the most published English composer.

Ave verum Corpus (In Festo Corporis Christi) (Prose in honour of the Blessed Sacrament, not in official liturgy)

Latin

Ave verum Corpus natum
de Maria Virgine:
Vere passum, immolatum
in cruce pro homine:
Cujus latus perforatum
unda fluxit sanguine:
Esto nobis prægustatum
in mortis examine.
O dulcis! O pie!
O Jesu fili Mariæ,
miserere mei.

Translation

Hail true Body, born
of the Virgin Mary:
that truly suffered, sacrificed
on the cross for man;
you, whose pierced side
flowed with a wave of blood,
let us have a foretaste of you
in the trial of our death.
O sweet, O merciful,
O Jesus son of Mary,
have mercy upon me.

Oh my, any chance you could send me a link to upload? Or let me know the username so I can search?

I've got quite a lot of Philips and plan on uploading a lot (I'm also going to be uploading a lot of Byrd's gradualia), I think you'll like Philips who was a truly talented composer now neglected. I have two performances of his music on my site - links above. Check them out the performance of O beatum et sacrosanctum diem is nice.

    Things are OK

  • Mark- this performance is as exquisite as any I have ever heard. Another YouTuber just uploaded the cembalo works of Philips last week. I was not at all acquainted with Peter Philips up until that time; so this is another welcomed addition. Thanks. Hope all is well. BRIAN
