Most German breeds need harsh training due to their intelligence and drive. By harsh I do not mean get violent, but you should use a bit of a mean tone when training them to help them calm down and focus on what you are saying. I did the same with my German Shepherd, and she was hyper, but turned out great.
Good job!! i just started to teach my 6month old dobie to roll over but he gets soooo excited when he sees food it's hard to get him to stay in the "down" position especially if he sees where i'm pullin the treats from
