The mazurka was a very popular dance in the 19th century, and was a popular dance in the pioneer West. This mazurka is from "The Peter Beemer Manuscript," handwritten for and played from for the dances in the mining camp of Warren's Diggins, Idaho, in the 1860s. In the manuscript, it is named "The Mazurka from Mr. Howard of Vancouver, W.T. (Washington Territory). Vivian published this manuscript, the first music manuscript from pioneer times in the West from which a band actually played dances that has been discovered and published. It also appears in "The Haynes Family Manuscript" from pioneer times in Oregon's Willamette Valley, the second such manuscript to be published by Vivian. An extensive search has not located this mazurka anywhere except in these two manuscripts, and it well could have been written by Mr. Howard in Vancouver, Washington, in pioneer times. It is performed here by Vivian Williams, violin, and Phil Williams, guitar. More about the Beemer and Haynes Family manuscripts can be found at www.voyagerrecords.com.
