With songs is that you're not going to pick up a vast amount vocabulary. However what I found it useful for, was to memorise phrases and become familiar with sentence structure.
Benny's approach to speaking again has been useful, because through mimicry I've picked up and become familiar with a lot of vocabulary. (This method probably increased my vocabulary and confidence the most)
However, these methods wouldn't have worked without spending time to understand basic grammar and common words.

Thank you, Steve. I thought I was the only one who hated flash cards. It may well be that using spaced repetition is very efficient (flash cards), but what's the point of doing it if it's boring and it's going to make you hate learning a language. I agree that the best way to learn a language is to listen and read. First, reading and listening are fun ways to learn, and second, they are the most natural ways to learn; any new vocabulary you pick up will be in a living context which aids memory.

Полностью согласен с таким подходом. Качество изучения любого языка, да и вообще осуществления любого дела, зависит в первую очередь от того, насколько тот, кто это делает непосредственно любит то, что он делает. История показывает, что все люди, добившиеся каких-либо вершин в чём-либо, прежде всего любили то, что делали. Также согласен и с тем, что не у всех есть по 5 часов в день свобоного времени на изучение языков.

Very good advice! I read Kató Lomb's book on how she learned languages and her method was mainly to read about things that interested her because personal interest provides the motivation to continue working. I took her advice and started reading Jane Eyre, my favourite novel, in French, and it's a real delight, it doesn't feel like work at all. She also suggests incorporating language practice into normal life, for example reading the news. Connection to real life improves memory retention.

Hey Steve, just out of curiosity, what do you think of Ziad Fazah?
wakold 1 year ago
@wakold I know very little about him. I saw a video of a TV program in Chile where he was unable to answer the most basic questions in languages he claimed to know. Did not look very good.

Steve, I wish you would have told us how many years in your opinion would it take a person to be conversational with 1 hours a day routine?
I totally agree on input, it's all about input and vocab at the end but teachers seem to realize that their services are not needed in this method though.

@mednos I did a video in response to your question, I hope that answers it properly.
