Sonia Trehan: Arangetram 2007

The following video shows excerpts from my two hour solo performance (or Arangetram) performed on June 8th, 2007. The pieces were perfected over the course of twelve years, and my performance signaled the transition from student to graduate of dance. The video shows segments that are focused solely on movement and those that incorporate facial expression (abhinaya). The last segment on the clip depicts the story of Mary Magdalene as she transforms from a courtesan into a devotee of Christ. This is an unusual piece in the Bharatanatyam tradition that was passed down by oral tradition.
