Oh my goodness!! My expression matched yours when I heard the 'refreshingly devoid of religion'. Star Trek is FULL of religion, even before the horrible Star Trek: Deep Space 9. Klingons have their own religions. Almost all the Aliens have different religions.
I dislike Star Wars because it is, quote, 'sci-fi porn'.

star trek is Buddhism, star wars is Christianity lol

Spock was devoted to logic and the Vulcans had Gods. classic series they went to a planet where the world of the Sun was just begone to be spread.
TNG Warf is devoted to his religion, and the touched a great deal on metaphysics and new age philosophy, especially with Wesley and the traveler, "Time Space & Thought not being the separate things they appear to be". crammed with gods magic and religion.

I like the nostalgic feel of Star Trek and the spirituality in Star Wars, because no one tells you to join an org. or church to go within. lol

there are plenty of trek episodes that go very deep into religions.. no way around it really.

Phasers stun!
Blasters KILL!!!
the Federation is a passive agressive fascism. I love the original star trek mind you, but there are few "we're taking your dilithium crystals, punk" type episodes and in general the prime directive is just sort of a motto, a cover story.

@pyrrho314 I was disappointed by Lucas' idea of the jedi when he made episodes 1, 2 & 3. The yoda/emperor fight scene was alright but...Liam Neeson...and then...Hayden Christensen?! didn't work for me.
I could swear that gratex was in the original Star Trek but he'll never admit it.

Yup, I agree...
Star Trek, Season 2, Episode 17
PICARD: There is no greater challenge than the study of philosophy.
WESLEY: But William James won't be in my Starfleet exams.
PICARD: The important things never will be. Anyone can be trained in the mechanics of piloting a starship. WESLEY: But Starfleet Academy PICARD: It takes more. Open your mind to the past. Art, history, philosophy. And all this may mean something.
The nuance in that quote says a lot imo.
