Josef Strauss's delightful Nachtschatten (Nightshade) was written for a concert in the Vienna Volksgarten on 5 July 1867. The illustrated title page of the first piano edition depicts the woody nightshade, the climbing herb sometimes called bittersweet. This polka-mazurka will be familiar to some listeners through the arrangement of an excerpt in the 1924 ballet‑pastiche Le Beau Danube.
