In an effort to reduce carbon emissions, airport staff is testing hydrogen powered bicycles to replace cars to get around the airport facility.

[Yuko Tsubone, Airport Employee]:
Because (the airport) is really large, it makes it easier to get around. I also think it's really nice since you can pedal without having to put in a lot of effort, and so you don't get tired.

The bicycle uses a hydrogen fuel cell to charge the onboard battery, similar to that used in an electric assisted bicycle. The system allows users to quickly fill up on hydrogen instead of waiting for a battery to charge.

The fuel cell generates electricity through an electrochemical reaction. Hydrogen is broken down and then combined with oxygen converting chemical energy into electrical energy.

[Yusuke Nagai, Hydrogen Energy Dept., Iwatani Corp.]:
The bicycle has a hydrogen cartridge and fuel cell inside. The hydrogen is sent to the fuel cell, and the electricity that is produced is then used to provide the power to assist pedaling.

The main benefit of using hydrogen as the energy source for the bicycles is that it is 100 percent environmentally friendly. The only waste product is water which emits only steam rather than carbon dioxide.

  • So why aren't the "Superpowers" doing this already? What is keeping them?

  • Its not that we dont want to use water powered cars its that a few people in government positions dont give a rats ass about how good it does for the ecosystem. If they arent making money out of this they wont hear of it.

  • @joelito101 the pyramids in egypt stored electricity powered from water that could generate enouph to power a city . so the knowledge is that old so why is it that people are talking about it as though its a new thing . just saying .

  • @MrROTD Those are not practical at all.

  • @Alias828 you take the solar power and wind and use the electricity to make hydrogen, compress the hydrogen for use whenever, you have no imagination

  • give that training wheels and its a WIN!

...what? not everyone knows how to ride a bike

  • @joelito101 Sun power = Bad because it is not always sunny and you need a huge amount of surface area & very expensive. Wind-power is bad, because it messes with birds, and disrupts air currents, very ugly, very expensive. They are way less cost efficient / relabel / realistic then other energy alternatives. The market may demand it later if prices for alternatives go up, but deal with gas until then. It is highly pressurized, and if it blows up that is bad. Market = smarter then you + me X 1000

  • @Alias828 Hydrogen escapes at 40 mph, too quick for a burn or an explosion, it can happen but it least likely. And we don't need nuclear or fossil energy to get hydrogen from water. We can use sun or wind energy to gather what we need to split hydrogen and oxygen.

  • @joelito101 Uhh, I agree with you, nothing is 100% safe (STOP attacking the straw man), but like you can have an accident with a car with a fuel tank and there is about a X% it would blow up, but the chance of it blowing up is like 3X% higher in this kind of ride. It is NOT clean, you don't know your facts. Where does the energy come from to isolate the hydrogen? Usually from some kind of process that requires external energy that ultimately results from Nuclear or Fossil energy.

  • @Alias828 We are driving bombs all the time, it is just how you look at energy. If we let fear control our decisions we would always be at home in our little hole. Clean byproduct energy is the only way.

  • @joelito101 1) needs pressure vessels, 2) not eco friendly, because the power comes from the outlet. You see, this statement shows a deeper level of your miss understanding. The superpowers use what the market demands. The market does not demand over expensive bikes with bombs on the back.
