Footage from Newport, Rhode Island, in 1963. Vacation onboard the president's yacht, the Honey Fitz.
With the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy, the yacht was refitted and on March 7, 1961 was renamed the Honey Fitz, honoring JFK's maternal grandfather (Former Mayor of Boston, and member of the House of Representatives, John Francis Fitzgerald).

The other thing I remember from this time period when Kennedy was in town was the 21 gun salute from the cannons at the Naval War College.

I was in second grade at St. Michael's school in Newport, RI in 63 and I vividly recall the excitement in town when the Kennedy's would visit. I remember my dad pointing out the secret service out by Hammersmith Farm. Then the horrible saddness that November, St. Michael's had the entire school go to it's chapel for a special service before being dismissed. This is forever etched in my memory. I remember it being very hard for me to understand and to believe
