SUDAN JUNE 22, Five days of protests led by hundreds of students from the University of Khartoum have spread throughout the capital city and neighboring northern towns.

Throughout the past five days, police have employed batons and tear gas to break up hundreds of students protesters. On Tuesday, clashes worsened as demonstrators blocked a street in Khartoum and threw stones at police, chanting "no to inflation" and "the people want to overthrow the regime."

Demonstrations were sparked by President Omar Hassan al-Bashir's proposed austerity measures, which officials claim are necessary to curb the growing budget gap, high inflation and deflating currency. In particular, Sudanese demonstrators are concerned about the removal of fuel subsidies which they claim could spark even more inflation. Opposing politicians threaten to ignite more protests if the subsidies are removed.

Sudan's economic crisis continues to deteriorate since splitting from the oil heavy region of South Sudan last July. Throughout the economic decline, smaller protests over food prices and rising living costs have sprouted in recent months. However none have garnered broader support or gained momentum. Student's are organizing a widespread general protest on June 30, 2012, the 23rd anniversary of the National Congress Party's (NCP).
