  • Wow...this is incredible. Ive loved the black is the color clip so much, wondering if there was another song before/after...and here it is, 16 tons, my favorite hi-lo's tune! They really nail the ending here, just like on the album, damn! What an incredible live performance. Wish they showed the band..

    Thanks again.

  • @Jkrome glad you got so much pleasure from my post. It was the Jerry Fielding orchestra. I have a clip of them posted on here from the same show. They're playing camptown races

  • Thanks for posting this rare clip of a great group with great chart by Billy May. The audio is a little out of sync. I remember reading about this problem being a common thing on Youtube, but I can't remember how they said to fix it.

  • @sweenus glad you like it! I played it through but can't see/ hear the sync problem. Is it at a certain time?

  • Tennessie Ernie Ford is the best performer of this song!

  • I was very fortunate to hear the "Hi-Lo's" at my Jr. High school (Sutter) in 1954. Even then, at the age of 14, I was totally amazed at the quality of their harmony! So later I was not wholly surprised to realize that Gene Puerling formed the group "Singers Unlimited", another absolutely stunning a-cappella group!

  • what year is this from, looks like 50's NBC TK41 living color alright, i got turned on to these guys at,i don't know 2 yrs old ?, great vid

  • The Hi Lo's harmonies are superb, they sing--they even breathe--as one which is both amazing and almost impossible for most other performers without any accappella performance experience. Their visual manner while performing what is supposed to be a bitter-sweet lyric of a working man trapped between duty to his family, lack or opportunity, and exploitation by a calloused and uncaring employer demands other than the perky smiles and bouncy moves displayed. They can and have done better.

  • Great Ian Freebairn-Smith chart - one of the few that wasn't done by Gene Puerling. But the truth is anything the Hi-Lo's sing is magical.
