Doctors Home from Haiti
By Rod Rowe
THE GOSHEN NEWS

A team of 16 volunteer doctors and nurses from South Bend and Mishawaka hospitals who traveled to Haiti for one week returned late Wednesday to the Goshen airport.

The local medical group joined about 70 others from the Boston area to care for hundreds of victims of the Jan. 12 earthquake at a hospital in northern Haiti in Milot.

The established hospital usually has 70 patients, but the patient count Tuesday night was about 429, said Doug Gibson, a critical care nurse from South Bend. He said South Bend Memorial and St. Joseph Hospital at Mishawaka usually have about 350 patients each.

The medical team had been communicating through computers and an occasional cellular telephone call, but worked 12 to 14-hour days. Members called the experience awesome.

Inspite of the devastation about 70 miles south at Port-au-Prince, the medical workers had a good trip.

We still managed to have a great time, Gibson said. We had a great time. It was hard to leave.
