this was the beginning of the end for the Fords @ Daytona and Talledega. The restrictor plates were implemented and just killed them. Never been the same since..

Another issue with ABC was, at least until merging with ESPN, they would use Paul Paige and Bobby Unser to call NASCAR races. Those guys know their indy racing but were out of their element calling NASCAR. I never knew Keith Jackson called auto racing until seeing this. That isn't the best idea either.

Well, this shows how unkempt ABC was when it comes to producing... "they're gonna start next time by..." and kept repeating it.

Well in this race everyone was forced to use a 390 CFM carb so it might as well have been a restrictor plate race. The pole speed was down 12mph from February. I doubt they ever got out of that pack.

Actually, Bill Elliott had won the Daytona 500 in '85 & '87, not the last 2 as stated here, and had never won this race at this point. He would win it the next year & in '91, though.

What does he mean @ :24 that Davey is "24 inches faster than the man on the outside of the front row"?

i hate that damn score board in the infield!
-
lol "They're gonna start this time around"

That turn 1 camera is almost at the same spot they put it now along the fence. Love this racing with no restrictor plates.
I Love Nascar from the 80's & 90's!!!

Good to see this old race, but this also reminds me of how bad ABC's coverage was. I never liked their camera angles and you can barely hear the cars. And back then the cars sounded really badass so I liked hearing them go down the straightaways. CBS's camera angles were definetly better and they also had better audio on the track.
