Hi there, after many many years of putting it off, I finally bought a bodhran 3 days ago.

I usually play ukulele or bass or cigarbox guitar or fiddle. I have always had an interest in drumming and the bodhran, so I am really enjoying your you tube tutorials. It's good that you have a great presentation style that doesn't put off us beginners that use your videos.

My first drum was supposed to be a present for my wife. I bought it second-hand from one of the players at a Session we went to listen to every week as she likes drums and rhythm instruments. The Session was in full swing and all the players told me I had to have a go at it so they showed me how to hold the tipper a couple of basic rhythms and I followed as best I could, sweating bullets the whole time. I loved being part of the music, kept the drum & had to find another for my wife's birthday.

When I bought my bodhran at Waltons in Dublin, they told me it was made in Korea. It sounds just fine.

I've enjoyed all of your videos and your love for the instrument.

It looks like my drum, think it's a Watson. I'm considering buying a new drum. Michelle, what do you think about the double skin drums? are they a better sound? and what size would you recommend? thanks Michelle!

Tx Michelle: Beautiful. My 1st drum also from Pakistan. It is now w/my grandson. I promised I wouldn't buy another 'til I mastered a roll which btw you taught me. p.s. I so enjoy a good love story so tx for sharing. My encounter w/ my hubby involved biking in pink shorts; him not me. LOL....married him anyway! He was a warm and sensitive man of the millenium.

Great story Michelle, your first bodhran is very much like mine: untunable and simple.

Mine was also made in Pakistan, and mine has a very nice tonal range, though the quality of the build is questionable. The skin is thinner in one place near the rim than the rest, there are marks around the inside edge where glue got on the skin, and the dreaded pinholes of a cheap drum are on one edge.

Despite this, I love my drum, and I practice with it everyday. Hoping for a new one this Christmas...
