New Yorkers are still reeling from a political earthquake that has turned the legislature upside down. At the center of the coup, two democratic Latino legislators barely known outside of the legislature, whose decision to join the republicans made it possible for the shocking and dramatic turn of events. Senator Espada is now The Senate President, and acting lieutenant governor, making him the most powerful Latino legislator in the State of New York. Is this a consequence of Latinos stepping up and demanding a major role in US politics?
