Gregg J. Borri explains the problems with the DePuy ASR hip replacement and the reasons for the DePuy ASR hip replacement recall. He filed one of the first claims against DePuy and Johnson & Johnson in the U.S. and continues to fight for those injured by the faulty hip implant. History:

In 2005, the DePuy ASR hip implant cup was cleared for use in the United States. Nearly 5 years later, in March 2010, the New York Times reported that DePuy Orthopedics, a division of Johnson & Johnson, had warned doctors that its ASR hip replacement cup, or socket, was failing in patients within only a few years of surgery when such implants should last 15 years or more. The design of DePuy's ASR hip replacement cup, according to specialists, is shallower than similar devices and is responsible for most of the cup's problems. According to the article, Dr. Stephen Graves, director of an Australian implant database, said that the data has shown for some time that the DePuy hip replacement has been failing prematurely. In December 2009, DePuy voluntarily withdrew the ASR from the Australian market.

Back in the United States, The Food and Drug Administration had received about 300 complaints about the DePuy ASR hip replacement since the beginning of 2008. Most of these patients had to have the DePuy hip implant device replaced soon after the initial implant procedure. In 2009, DePuy Orthopaedics announced that it is withdrawing the DePuy ASR hip replacement prosthesis from the market due to poor sales. It denied at the time that the DePuy ASR was defective and said it was not planning to recall the device.

However, in July 2010 DePuy issued a recall of the DePuy ASR cups and on August 26, 2010, recalled the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System and the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System (not approved in the United States) due to the number of patients who required a second hip replacement soon after the initial implant.

  • Sorry to hear your dad needed surgery. The good news is that most of the time the outcomes are good. Gregg

  • My dad had this. He just went in for surgery for a new hip today.. they caused him alot of pain.

  • @telstar68 -- I think most people with knowledge would say that in most cases surgical technique is not implicated in ASR failure. See the recent article Disappointing Short-Term Results with the DePuy XL Metal-on-Metal Total Arthroplasty by Bernthal, et al. in The Journal of Arthroplasty. In that single surgeon study, 28.6% of 70 ASRs demonstrated dysfunction within five years (17.1% required revision within three years) and failures did not correlate with cup placement.
